EVERYTHING MUST GO

August 18th 2010 18:43 BST — Spine Crew

Another sad sign of the times: long running New York hip-hop retail HQ Fat Beats will close its doors (along with those of its LA branch) for good next month.

Dwayne Reed – An end of an era for sure, although I saw this coming a long time ago. I seriously regret not buying a Percee P demo all those times I saw him out front. I brought one from Creature instead, big mistake. Either way this is another in a long line of NYC institutions that will be sorely missed. Gonna buy everything my broke ass can afford from Fat Beats before it closes.

The second part of TMI's Soho Record Stores story visits Wyld Pytch, Sister Ray and Spine Radio hosts Sounds of The Universe. According to Zora, manager of Wyld Pytch for the last 12 years, there were once as many as fifty record shops in this part of London. But it's not all doom and gloom, is it?

You can catch part one here.

Forbes' list of rap's mega rich throws up the usual suspects; MTV reports on their ventures outside of the vocal booth. Bryan 'Baby' Williams has an oil company? Looks like these guys can afford to cough up to the IRS once in a while.

GOING BACK TO CALI

Will Holland's relentless pursuit of the perfect groove has seen him explore almost every musical angle of the African diaspora and produce an almost confusing number of projects in the process. His latest outfit, Quantic Presenta Flowering Inferno has just released Dog With a Rope, a tropical sounclash of reggae, funk and cumbia. We have a few copies up for grabs so if you fancy one, holler.

Robstarr – Tres boring
Fingertips – Don't understand it. He has no charisma or substance. A delivery that would send you to sleep or at the least skip the track.
peter – Comment
peter – Hustle on = hustling like Rowsay. Boring indeed.
bump63 – I have to say I couldn't agree more. This dude got youtube heat from loads of children who thought he was hard and that translated into a record deal. Production is bullsh!t, flow is bullsh!t, content is bullsh!t, video is bullsh!t. Is it ironic? Is it ironic to like it? What's to like? If anyone can explain it to me and my best mate Fingertips I'd be grateful...
hatersunite – Grumpy old backpackers. Big up Giggs!
me – If You dont like it your a "Backpacker" what is this 1998?
Leroy – It may not be everyone's cup of tea but he definitely speaks to a demographic who appreciate what he does.
Jaws – Next....

A lot of rappers have their sights set on the big screen, but television suffices for Cee-Lo. His forthcoming show 'Lay It Down' will be performance and interview-based.
